Chapter Seven

Startled from sleep by a sharp slap on her ass, Jenna screeched and sat up, the blanket falling to her waist. She squinted her eyes against the sharp glare from the bedside lamp and saw Jackson standing over her, a smug grin on his face. The scent of the shower gel he used filled the air and mixed with the scent of sex that surrounded her. He was already dressed in blue jeans and a faded T-shirt.

“Time to get up. You’ve got twenty minutes to shower, get dressed, and get downstairs.”

She glanced at the open drapes and saw that it was still dark outside. Grabbing the blanket, she pulled it around her shoulders as she slid down on the bed and rolled onto her side away from the bright light. “Go away, Jackson. It’s still dark outside.”

“Days start early on the ranch, angel. You can get dressed and meet me in the kitchen, or I can take you to the stable wrapped in a sheet. Your choice.”

Snorting, Jenna let her eyes drift shut. “Or, I can go back to sleep and see you at lunch.” When he didn’t respond to her remark, she rolled to her back, expecting to find him still standing by the bed. She was surprised to see she was alone in the room. Wondering if he had gone into the bathroom, she called his name. When she didn’t get an answer, she wondered how he moved so silently, then yawned and closed her eyes.

It was his fault she was so tired this morning. After returning to the house the night before, they had gone over her limits and then he had kept her up most of the night. She didn’t know how he managed to function on so little sleep but she needed a solid eight hours. Sliding onto her tummy, she wrapped her arms around his pillow, smiled when she smelled his scent, and then slid her legs over the sheets, enjoying the smoothness of the high thread count against her skin. Jackson may be a tough guy, she thought, but he certainly appreciates the finer things in life.

A little smile curved her lips as she thought about the previous night. She didn’t intend to have a long-term relationship with Jackson, but she’d decided to enjoy the next three weeks. The way she figured it right now she was a convenience for him. She was in his home, under his roof, and in his bed. Three weeks from now she would move out and he would move on. And, so would she. A win-win situation for both of them.

Rolling over, she stretched, then opened her eyes and screamed. “Dammit, Jackson. Don’t do that. I can’t stand it when you sneak up on me that way!”

“Time’s up, angel.”

“What?”

Instead of answering her, he reached down, wrapped the sheet around her, and then picked her up and slipped her over his shoulder. “I gave you two choices.”

Struggling, she grabbed his belt and tried to kick her legs. “Jackson, don’t you dare.
